The Nonsense is Over (we hope)

AmericasCup The Nonsense is Over (we hope)

There’s no denying that this 33rd America’s Cup has been a mixture of farce, ego, frustration, ego, anger, ego, apathy, ego, speed, ego, courts, ego, money, ego, screamingly fast boats and … ego! (Can you spot the main theme there?)

“It’s always been about ego”, you might say. I wouldn’t disagree, but I would argue that this event has seen more of it than most.

Years of court battles. Millions of $$ spent on arguing the toss. Exclusion of all other competitors. Soured relations with Louis Vuitton and masses and masses and masses of shattered good will. And then it was over in a matter of seconds.

I’m not kidding you. I blinked last week and when my eyes opened again the Cup had been won. I rubbed my eyes to check I wasn’t having a dream and it was true. I missed the racing because my eyeballs needed a little lubrication.

This America’s Cup then has been like watching two strutting teenagers in the school playground fighting over the best looking girl. Fists and insults thrown and finally they get their swollen egos out to see whose is larger. Suddenly, like an inexperienced, fumbling virgin, the main event is prematurely over. And the loser gets the damp patch.

There was no sport. No spirit. No humility. No fun. Just a bad, inadequate experience for all. Especially bad for the best looking girl in the playground – the ‘Aulg Mug’. Of all the onlookers I suspect that she was the least impressed by any of it.

Thank the lord that the Cup is out of the hands of the looney whose brain is clearly made from Swiss Cheese – spongy and full of holes.

America please welcome the ‘America’s Cup’.

Now we just need Team Origin to win it for the glorious UK next time around!
